When utility service returns, your Generac transfers the home back to utility power, completes its cool-down cycle and shuts down automatically. Start With a Safe Visual Inspection
Wait until local authorities say conditions are safe. From outside the generator, look for standing water, storm debris, impact damage, loose panels, blocked ventilation, oil or fuel indications and anything that looks different from before the storm. Do not touch flooded electrical equipment or remove panels unless you are trained and authorized to do so.
- Remove loose debris only when the unit is stopped and safe
- Confirm the controller has returned to AUTO
- Review any lights, warnings or Mobile Link messages
- Record the operating hours if accessible
- Note whether utility power is stable
- Do not silence a recurring alarm by repeatedly resetting it
A Long Run May Trigger Maintenance
Maintenance needs vary by generator model, age, operating hours and service history. A long continuous run can bring the unit to an oil, filter or inspection interval. The right response is based on the model-specific owner’s manual and the actual hours accumulated—not guesswork.

The generator is only one part of the system. A post-storm visit may include the transfer switch, battery, fuel connections, enclosure, airflow path, load-management controls, fault history and automatic sequence. Propane owners should also arrange fuel replenishment as needed.
