An Extended Outage Changes Generator Ownership
During a short outage, the generator may start, carry the home and shut down without needing attention. A multi-day outage is different. The engine is working continuously in heat, humidity and storm debris, and the homeowner must pay attention to operating condition, oil, airflow and fuel.
Check the Oil During Continuous Operation
Generac’s storm-preparation guidance says to check the oil level every 24 hours during extended, continuous operation. Use the exact shutdown and restart procedure in the owner’s manual for your model. Allow hot equipment to cool and never reach into or service a running generator.
A newly installed unit may also reach its break-in service interval during its first long outage. Keep the correct oil and filter available before a storm, because roads, supply houses and service routes may be limited afterward.
Watch Fuel Supply and Household Demand
Natural-gas customers should avoid altering fuel valves or piping. Propane customers should know the tank level before the storm and understand that the generator may share fuel with other appliances. Reducing unnecessary electrical loads can reduce fuel use and stress on the system.
Load-management controls may temporarily delay or shed selected equipment so the generator can protect essential loads without being overloaded. That behavior may be normal; do not bypass the controls.
Inspect From a Safe Distance
When conditions are safe, look and listen for changes. Keep the air-intake and exhaust areas clear. Watch for alarms, leaks, smoke, unusual vibration, surging or new mechanical noise. Never approach flooded or visibly damaged electrical equipment.
- Confirm the controller remains in AUTO
- Check Mobile Link notifications
- Keep debris away from the enclosure
- Note any unusual smell, noise or vibration
- Avoid opening the enclosure during severe weather
- Call for qualified service if an alarm returns
How WingatePower Helps During an Outage
For customers with appropriate monitoring and service coverage, WingatePower can review certain Mobile Link notifications, help interpret alarms, explain safe homeowner steps and plan service when roads and site conditions allow. We already know Generac equipment, so you are not starting from scratch in the middle of an emergency.
If a red alarm appears, the unit stops, oil is low, a leak is suspected or the equipment has been flooded or damaged, do not keep resetting it. Contact WingatePower for guidance.
