Hurricane season in Charleston was relatively kind to us this year. We saw some localized outages, but we didn’t get the kind of severe storms that can keep entire neighborhoods in the dark for days at a time.

Even with a milder season, I’ve seen more and more homeowners and business owners move forward with whole-home generators. In my recent interview on Palmetto Life, I talked about why that’s happening and what really matters when you’re choosing a generator and an installation company.

This post is an overview of what I shared on the show, along with a few key details that are especially important if you’re considering a generator for your own property.

Why Charleston Homeowners Are Moving Ahead With Generators Now

Even without a major storm this year, a lot of people told us the same thing: they were tired of worrying about “what if.”

From the conversations I have every day, there are three main reasons people are installing generators right now:

1. Peace of mind when you’re not home

If you’re out of town and the power goes out, your home is at risk in ways you might not think about right away:

  • Humidity and moisture problems that can lead to mold and mildew
  • Food spoiling in refrigerators and freezers
  • Sensitive equipment shutting down unexpectedly

A properly sized standby generator keeps key systems running automatically when the utility power fails. For many of our customers, the main reason they call us is simple: they don’t want to worry about what’s happening at home every time the weather turns bad.

2. Protecting your ability to work from home

We’ve seen a big increase in customers who work remotely or run a business out of their house. For them, an outage isn’t just a minor inconvenience — it can affect income and their reputation with clients.

A generator helps keep:

  • Your home office powered
  • Internet and networking equipment online
  • Heating and cooling running so you can stay productive

If you can’t afford to be offline for hours at a time, having backup power in place becomes less of a luxury and more of a basic tool for doing your job.

3. Keeping your family safe when you have to be elsewhere

We also work with a lot of first responders, healthcare workers, and people whose jobs require them to be on site during storms.

They may be at the hospital, at the station, or out helping others, while their family is at home riding things out. A generator provides a way to make sure their loved ones have lights, heating or cooling, and a safe, comfortable environment even if the power goes out.

That peace of mind is one of the most common things people bring up when we finish an installation.

A Generator as an Investment in Your Home’s Value

On Palmetto Life, I mentioned that many homeowners also look at a generator as an investment in their property.

A permanently installed standby generator can:

  • Make your home more attractive to buyers
  • Set your property apart in a competitive market
  • Be viewed similarly to other major upgrades that improve safety and comfort

When buyers compare two houses in an area that’s prone to outages, the one with a professionally installed generator has a clear advantage. It’s an upgrade that you benefit from while you live in the home, and something that can pay off again when you decide to sell.

What Sets WingatePower Apart

A lot of companies will install a generator if you ask them to. At WingatePower, generators aren’t something we do “on the side” — they’re what we focus on.

Here are a few of the things I highlighted on Palmetto Life:

We specialize in generators

We don’t install ceiling fans, do plumbing, or take on general electrical odds and ends. Our business is built around generators.

That focus means our team spends its time learning, installing, and servicing the same family of systems over and over again, across many different home and site conditions. That depth of experience is important when you’re dealing with equipment that needs to perform reliably in emergencies.

We invest in training and certification

When we bring someone onto the team, we train them in-house and then send them to Generac for classes and certifications.

That training continues over time as equipment and best practices evolve.

We’re careful about who we send to your home

One line from the interview that seemed to resonate with viewers is something I say internally a lot:

We’re not going to send anybody to your house that we wouldn’t have at ours.

For us, that’s the standard. Technical skill matters, but so do professionalism, safety, and how someone carries themselves in and around your home and family. We vet our technicians with that in mind.

What a Typical Generator Installation Costs

On the show, I shared a general range that we see often for standard residential installations in our area.

For many Charleston homeowners, a typical whole-home generator project will fall somewhere in the $13,000–$15,000range.

That’s not a fixed price, and there are several factors that affect where a particular project lands, including:

  • Generator size (how much of the home you want to back up)
  • Location on the property
  • Elevation requirements (if the unit needs to be raised)
  • Distance from the electrical panel and gas source
  • Any additional engineering or site work that’s needed

The goal of an in-home consultation is to look at your specific situation, answer your questions, and give you a clear, detailed quote so you know exactly what to expect.

Making It Easier to Move Forward: Financing Options

One thing I always want to emphasize is that you don’t necessarily have to pay for a generator installation all at once.

WingatePower offers financing options (with approved credit) that can spread the cost out into monthly payments. For many customers, this is what makes it realistic to move ahead now instead of waiting several more seasons.

Financing can turn a large one-time expense into something that fits into a normal household budget, while still giving you the benefits immediately:

  • Backup power for storms and unexpected outages
  • Protection for your home, work, and family
  • A long-term upgrade that can increase your property’s value

If you’re interested in a generator but are concerned about the upfront cost, it’s worth asking about what’s available when you schedule a consultation.

Next Steps If You’re Considering a Generator

In the Palmetto Life segment, we talked about a few ways viewers could take the next step:

Whether you decide to move forward soon or you’re still in the research phase, the most important thing is to understand your options before the next storm season arrives, not during it.
